If you want to use Windows 10 quickly and efficiently, there is no avoiding individual adjustments. Sometimes a little movement is all it takes – or you can retrofit useful functions using tools.

What the optimal Windows looks like depends on personal preferences and the area of   application. However, there are many Windows settings that can be tweaked and benefit all users. A number of Windows deficiencies affect basic functions that slow many users in their productive work. A lot can be improved here with suitable tools. For this article, we have therefore collected tips and tools that will help you operate the system better and speed up work with Windows.

  • Start Windows faster
  • If you shut down your computer properly every evening, you risk losing the application information stored in the memory. Windows 10 then has to reload it the next time it boots – and that costs time. For a few seconds ahead, button up the BIOS or its successor UEFI: In the “Boot” menu, which is arranged differently depending on the BIOS version, the hard disk or the SSD should be set as the primary boot drive You start the system. Also deactivate starting via the network and all unused controllers such as USB or the DVD drive. This way, the BIOS does not look unnecessarily for a bootable operating system. To access the BIOS or UEFI setup, you usually have to press the [Del] or [F2] key after switching on the computer. If necessary, the manual of your PC will help you.

    2. Reclaim lost space

Anyone who has upgraded to Windows 10 will find that up to 20 gigabytes less hard drive space are available. What happened? Windows saves the previous installation as well as the temporary data required to upgrade to the current version of the operating system. However, if you use a slim SSD with little storage space, you have to rely on every megabyte. Means: This useless data has to go! Call up “Disk Cleanup” from the start menu. It may take a moment to start. Then click on the “Clean up system files” button. In the menu that now follows, you will see an entry named “Temporary Windows installation files”, “Temporary Internet files” or “Log files for Windows upgrade”. You can mark all of these elements with a tick. Then click on “Ok”. This useless ballast is thus deleted.

  • More security with Defender: Activate adware protection
  • Microsoft has given its own anti-virus tool Windows Defender an upgrade: The program now also detects adware – that is, annoying advertising programs that are often installed with free software. The stupid thing: Actually, only company networks should be protected with the drilled Defender. This hack also gives every other Windows 10 user increased protection against unwanted applications: Call up the registry again by starting “regedit” via [Win] + [R]. Click on the left in the “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / Software / Policies / Microsoft/ Windows Defender / MpEngine “. Here you now have to create the 32-bit DWORD “MpEnablePus” with the value 1. As soon as this is done, Windows Defender pays much more attention after a restart: As soon as, for example, you download software infected with advertising tools with the Edge browser, the Defender sounds the alarm.

    4. Everything under control: activate the famous Godmode

Microsoft has implemented a great feature since Windows 7, with which you can manage and call up up to 250 settings centrally: Godmode. You can also access the settings in the current Windows 10 via a new folder on the desktop. And this is how it works: Right-click on a free space on the desktop and select “New” and then “Folder” from the menu.

Now the most important part follows: Name the folder “Godmode. {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}” and press [Enter] or click on “Okay”. Windows 10 now links the collection of system settings to your desktop Whether to fix monitor flickering, reset passwords or use BitLocker drive encryption: In Godmode you will find all the important settings for Windows 10.

    5. Activate and use the dark theme

If the gray and white of Windows 10 bothers you, you can give the operating system a much cooler look. The dark theme, or dark design, dips the standard Windows 10 interface – e.g. the system settings – in a mysterious black. And this is how you unlock the theme.

In the first published Windows 10 version you still had to work with the registry (see below). It’s also much more convenient now. To do this, open the Windows 10 settings and switch to the “Personalization” and “Colors” area. Now scroll down to “Select standard app mode”. “Hell” is activated by default. Simply click on the “Dark” entry and the change will take effect immediately.

Activate the dark theme via the registry: Enter the Windows registry again via [Win] + [R] and the command “regedit”. Find the path “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Themes / Personalize”. If the key “Personalize” is not available, create it by right-clicking on “Themes”. Now click with the right mouse button in the free field under “Personalize” and create the 32-bit DWORD “AppsUseLightTheme”. This hex value must have the value zero. Create exactly the same DWORD in the registry path “HKEY_CURRENT_USER / SOFTWARE / Microsoft / Windows / CurrentVersion / Themes / Personalize”. Finished! A restart is not required. You can admire the new design right away, for example by calling up the settings in the start menu.
